Verizon has picked Samsung as a supplier for its 5G service, with an aim to deploy three to five 5G networks across the United States in the next few years, according to the Wall Street Journal on January 4. Under the deal, Samsung will provide Verizon with routers and radio frequency planning services to help the latter with 5G commercialization, which will be first available in Sacramento CA in the second half of 2018. Samsung will also provide Verizon customization services for fixed 5G home routers and 5G radio access units. Starting in 2017, both parties have collaborated on 5G trials in Georgia, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Texas, and Washington DC. To this end, Samsung is able to ensure its complete end-to-end 5G product portfolio is ready for commercialization following these trials. Aside from Samsung, Verizon is also utilizing network equipment from Qualcomm, Ericsson, Cisco, Intel, LG, and Nokia to undertake its pre-commercial 5G trial networks across the United States.
